Not sure what to say?

The messages that help most aren’t advice. Say what it actually felt like, then say what’s true now.

  • What did the bad day actually feel like, and what got you through it?
  • How long did it actually take before anything felt different?
  • What's the biggest thing you've had to overcome?
  • Tell me about a moment when someone's kindness made a difference for you.
  • Talk to the version of you that hadn't started recovery yet.
  • Tell me about a day when you first believed it was actually working.
Things to consider

Things to consider

A few things that help more people hear themselves in what you say.

  • Avoid naming the substance. Or the program. Someone on a different path may decide this isn’t for them and stop. What it felt like is what they recognize.
  • Avoid naming other people. Respect the privacy of other people who didn’t agree to be on a recording that may be played in public.
  • Avoid the play-by-play of using. Graphic details can shut a listener down, or turn the story into a show. The feeling and what changed are enough.
  • This may travel. Strangers may hear it, at a festival and online. If you wouldn’t want your last name or workplace on it, leave those off.
